R A G G I N G – A social menace

What is ragging?
Who brought/introduced it in our schools and colleges?
How far parents are responsible?
What is the role played by parents, school/college managements?
What is the role played by the law enforcing agencies?
What the law says about ragging?
What/where is the compensation to the victims?
What punishment is awarded to the CULPRITS?

These are the million dollar questions, that are unanswered or partially answered, but not to the satisfaction of the VICTIMS.

The definition given by ‘Wikipedia’ to the word ragging is
Ragging (known in the USA as hazing) is the systematic ritual physical and psychological abuse of freshmen or other juniors by their seniors in an educational setup, with the purported intent of socially inducting the newcomers into the group. It is widely practised in schools and colleges across the world, and often leads to excesses which have been widely condemned in all societies. The phenomenon is particularly prevalent in army and police forces, where new recruits are required to undergo a degree of physical abuse. This practice is to a large degree actively promoted by many military groups.
“with the purported intent of socially inducting the newcomers into the group” – so far so good. “often leads to excesses which have been widely condemned in all societies”. Only condemning the incidence is not enough, at least in INDIA. Every year during the opening season of the educational institutes, June & July months and till the end of the academic year, we will be hearing the news of this RAGGING, often end up with suicides.
The British, during their colonial period, has brought RAGGING, they call it FAGGING, into India. The British have left India, but RAGGING still remains in India. RAGGING and FAGGING are two different activities. But excess of anything is dangerous.
The moment your ward becomes a senior in his college (completes the first year), he should be educated about this social menace, about human rights and about decency. The parents are totally responsible, if their ward joins the unsocial elements in the college and participate in RAGGING. For sometime a close follow up of his college activities are to be followed. This is very much necessary to curb the menace of RAGGING.
The Supreme Court of India, in its interim order, in the year 2001, has clearly spelled out that the educational institute has to lodge the FIR, besides conducting its own enquiry and spelled out several other measures to curb ragging. Dr.R.K.Raghavan has submitted his report on curbing ragging during May, 2007, with several recommendations. We should wait and see what will happen or the outcome of it.
The torture or the acts that are to be committed on account of this RAGGING has become unbearable and often leads to suicides. In several cases the students refused to attend the colleges for fear of RAGGING. In most of the cases the culprits go scot free and the sufferers remain as sufferers. We all know in India, the law for the rich is different from the law for the poor or for a common man. A common man cannot win these RAGGING cases. He has to suffer silently. In the case fair sex it is still worse.
I request all of you to follow and read this link for further knowledge and developments with regards to RAGGING.

I PRAY GOD LET THE BETTER SENSE BE PREVAILED UPON THESE PEOPLE AND LET THEM LEAD A LIFE WITH PRIDE.
